Lake Martin Riprap Cost: Per-Foot Ranges, Fees & What Moves the Price
What does riprap cost on Lake Martin? We haven't found a published local price list, and we won't invent one. Instead you'll find the national per-foot and per-ton figures Angi publishes, the arithmetic for a range of bank lengths, Alabama Power's fixed permit fees, and the site conditions on this lake that push a quote higher or lower. In the end, the figure to plan around is a written price from a contractor who has stood on your bank.
The national figures
Angi's riprap cost guide, labeled 2025 data, is the most specific published source we found. It is national, not Alabama or Lake Martin pricing.
Angi, riprap (2025 data, national)
- Per linear foot
- $70 to $400
- Average project
- $20,000
- Normal range
- $10,000 to $30,000
- Typical length
- Most projects 100 to 300 linear feet
- Rock alone
- $20 to $110 per ton
- Excavation
- Up to $6,700
- Structural engineer
- $200 to $1,500 total, when a job calls for one
Angi also lists building permits at $525 to $3,050 nationally. That figure doesn't describe Lake Martin, where the permit cost you can count on is Alabama Power's fee, covered below.
Worked out for common shoreline lengths
Multiplying Angi's low and high per-foot figures by a few bank lengths shows how wide the spread is. None of these is a price for your lot:
- 80 feet of bank: $5,600 at the low end, $32,000 at the high end
- 125 feet of bank: $8,750 to $50,000
- 175 feet of bank: $12,250 to $70,000
- 250 feet of bank: $17,500 to $100,000
Angi's $10,000 to $30,000 "normal range" sits in the lower part of these spans, which suggests most jobs don't land at $400 a foot. Where a particular Lake Martin bank falls depends on the factors below.

Alabama Power's fees
These come straight from Alabama Power's Lake Martin guidelines, and they're the one fixed cost in the job:
- $400 General Construction Fee for new riprap, a new seawall, or added length of either.
- $200 General Repair Fee for substantial repairs, including "adding rip rap to an existing rip rap footprint."
- $100 to modify a permit.
- $600, $400 or $800 if work goes ahead without approval or out of compliance: the unauthorized construction, unauthorized structure repair and non-compliance fees.
Rebuilding a permitted structure that natural causes totally destroyed carries none of these fees if you apply within 180 days. Ask whether your contractor's price includes preparing the permit drawing, and who pays the fee. The permits guide covers the process.
What moves the price on Lake Martin
Angi names rock type, quantity, shoreline length and width, steeper slopes, "larger bodies of water with higher wave energy," and "the fabric or other matter placed under the riprap" as cost drivers. On this lake a few more come into play:
- How the rock gets there. Barge or land delivery, how far the stone travels, and whether a truck can reach your bank.
- Bank height and exposure. Lake Martin covers 41,150 acres and runs 31 miles. A bank facing open water takes more wave energy than one tucked in a cove, and a tall bank takes more stone per foot.
- Water level. Work at the 484-foot winter level reaches the lower bank more easily than work at the 491-foot summer level. See the drawdown page.
- An existing seawall. Riprap at the toe of a wall, or removing a failed wall first, changes the scope.
- Bedding and fabric. Under the Corps PGP, fabric under riprap "shall be considered and may be required," and it adds material and labor when it's used.
- Erosion control. Sediment controls have to be kept working throughout the job.
- Restoring the yard. Repairing lawn, landscaping or paths the equipment crosses.
How to compare two quotes
Two riprap prices only mean something side by side if they price the same job. Before comparing, get each of these on paper from every bidder:
- The length of bank covered, in feet, and how it was measured.
- The stone: its size, its type, and an estimated tonnage.
- The layer beneath the stone, whether fabric, smaller bedding rock, or both.
- How the bottom edge is set, and the finished slope.
- Barge or land access, and any yard repair included.
- Who draws up the permit paperwork for Alabama Power, and whether the $400 or $200 fee is in the price.
- When the work would happen relative to the drawdown, and when it will be finished.
- Payment schedule, and what happens if the permit comes back with changes.
If the work could exceed $10,000, read who does the work for the Alabama licensing thresholds and the written-contract rules that come with them.
Cost questions
What does 200 feet of riprap cost on Lake Martin?
At Angi's national range of $70 to $400 a foot, $14,000 to $80,000, plus Alabama Power's $400 fee. No published Lake Martin figure narrows that, so get a written quote.
Is riprap cheaper than a seawall?
A 2021 Lake Martin Voice column by a local realtor said "Riprap is usually the cheapest and quickest seawall to build at the lake." We have no published local seawall prices to check that against, so ask for both options priced on your shoreline.
Does topping up old riprap cost less?
It may take less rock than a new job, but it still needs approval: Alabama Power counts adding rock to an existing footprint as repair, with a $200 fee.
